Middle school band and orchestra students received special attention from professional musicians in a series of eight mentoring workshops at Emerson and Lincoln schools of District 64. The early hour of 7:00 a.m. class time deterred no one in their pursuit of focusing on developing musical skills. Nine Park Ridge Civic Orchestra (PRCO) members visited the schools to coach small groups of woodwinds, strings, and brass players.
Student ensembles included Emersons Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Orchestra 2; and Lincolns Symphonic Band, Concert Orchestra 1, Concert Band, and Orchestra 2. Their teachers are Brian Jacobi, Eric Bachmann, Erica Charous, Mary Ciccotelli, Jamie Hestad, Max Hellerman, and Natalie Jacobsen.
Guest artists were on hand to play in the section with the students, offer performance suggestions and demonstrations, and take a section out of rehearsal for a brief masterclass. Participating PRCO musicians were Anna Najoom, clarinet; Margaret Daly, cello; Alan Steiner, bass; Karl Davies, viola; Nina Saito, violin; David Tuttle, clarinet; Dan Sartori, trombone; Gene Arnold, trumpet; and Lisa Taylor, French horn.
The mentoring clinics took place from March 13 through April 28, 2015, with three guests visiting per class.
Playing in the Halloween concert has become an annual tradition for District 64 students, sitting side-by-side in the orchestra with the PRCO. The experience of playing in a professional orchestra on stage at the Pickwick is a great opportunity for the students and a great treat for the Orchestra members.
The public will have a chance to hear the combined group on October 28, 2015, when the Park Ridge Civic Orchestra opens its 22nd season with its third annual Halloween Concert for all ages at 7:00 p.m. at the Pickwick Theatre.
The clinics were underwritten in part by the Park Ridge Cultural Arts Council, the Illinois Arts Council and by District 64s Band and Orchestra Parents Association.
